|Recurring Event (See all)
An event every year that begins at 00:00 on day 1 of November, repeating indefinitely
Nellie Verne Burt McPherson
in 1928Nellie Verne Burn McPherson,
then president of the Bement Women’s Club,
made this day in honor of one of her favorite writers
of fiction: Irving Bacheller.
McPherson had written Bacheller a letter telling him
how much she had enjoyed his story, “Eben Holden’s Last Day A’Fishin”.
Bacheller enjoyed her appreciation so much that
he send her an autographed copy of one of his newer books.
This very nice reply of Bacheller made McPherson
fan-squee a holiday in existence.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs agreed with her
and Authors’ Day was settled on November 1.
Much later in 1949 the U.S. Department of Commerce
also adopted Author’s Day.
The way to celebrate this holiday is to write an author
of your choice a nice thankful letter.
Just like Nellie did that day long ago.
Make that writer feel special telling them how the story,
that they poured their heart into, touched your heart.
