Bagelfest began as a free bagel breakfast in Mattoon organized by Murray Lender, spokesman of Lender’s Bagels.
This became an annual event promoting bagels annually combined with the other festive activities.
As usual with annual food celebrations, the holiday got copied to other locations and around the world. Making it lose it’s “national” status.
