First occurrence:
Beaujolais Nouveau Day was made to celebrate the end of the wine harvest because beaujolais nouveauΒ is a good wine to drink while aged relatively young.
It has been celebrated before after the 15th of December because of official regulations prohibiting it to be sold earlier.
In 1951 these rules became more lenient and a date was set on November 15.
The Union Interprofessionnelle des Vins du Beaujolais (UIVB) decided to make a marketing campaign out of racing the first bottles of beaujolais nouveau to Paris.
This became a national event in the 1970ies and in the 1980ies other countries in Europe did similar races and in the 1990ies Asia and the U.S.A. also had similar wine races.
The popularity of these races resulted in 1985 that the official date for Beaujolais Nouveau Day became settled world wide in the third Thursday of November.
Because starting the race would give enough time for optimal marketing in the weekend.
