An event every year that begins at 00:00 on day 5 of July, repeating indefinitely
When: July 5
First occurrence: 1946
On July 5, 1946 a two piece swimsuit, which of course already existed long before, was for the first time introduced as a “bikini”. The name was inspired on the Bikini Atol where 4 days earlier nuclear tests were performed. The name was intended to provoke “explosive commercial and cultural reaction”. Maybe it’s a good thing that the word “bikini” became more associated with more pleasant imagery like a tropical beach and a word play with the “bi” part of the word which lead to variations like “monokini’, “burkini” and “tankini” later on.
