An event every year that begins at 00:00 on day 23 of September, repeating indefinitely
When: September 23
First occurrence: 1952
This date commemorates the “Checkers Speech” on
September 23, 1952. Known the be one of the most famous speeches
in US political history…
because it had a dog in it.
Richard Nixon was under fire for using campaign funds
and donations for his own personal use. He justified this by telling the public a heart touching story
about how one of those donations was their new pet dog
which they named Checkers.
And his children loved Checkers so they would
never give him back.
This worked wonders to distract the public from reclaiming
the campaign funds and unmentioned donations. Also he got to be vice president for several terms.
After that he became one of the more debatable
presidents in US history.
Which raises the question:
Should we have dogs in politics? Maybe if Checkers could have spoken for himself, he would
have merely asked funds for a nice soft basket and a sausage.
No doubt he would have been just straight forward about that. Maybe we’re doing politics all wrong.
