The Eight Hours Movement in Melbourne, Australia, succeeded on April 21 in 1856 to establish the 8 hour work day with minimum wage to prevent employees from demanding ridiculously long working days for little pay.

With an 8 hour work day a worker would have:
– 8 hours to work,
– 8 hours for sleep and
– 8 hours for much needed personal time.

Eight Hours Day is celebrated every year on the second Monday in March
