French toast
noun

– bread dipped in a mixture of egg and milk and sautéed

French toast is traditionally eaten with some kind of sweet topping like syrup or marmelade.
Optional is adding some cinnamon and/or rum to the mixture.

🍞
One of the oldest references to the recipe of french toast dates back to somewhere in the 4th or 5th century.
A collection of Latin recipes from that time, named “Apicius” mentions a  recipe called “aliter dulcia”,
which translates to “another sweet dish”.

“slice fine white bread, remove the crust, and break it into large pieces. Soak these pieces in milk and beaten egg, fry in oil, and cover with honey before serving.”

🍞

French toast is also known as:

  • Eggy bread
  • German toast
  • Gypsy toast
  • Bombay toast
  • Poor knights of Windsor
  • Pain perdu (French for “lost bread”)
  • Sāidōsí (Cantonese for “western toast”)
  • Wentelteefjes (Dutch for “flipped bitches”, nobody knows why)

“I once went out with this wild girl.
She made French toast
and got her tongue caught in the toaster.”
–Rodney Dangerfield
