First occurrence:
Marzipan Day celebrates the sweet stuff
that in it’s purest form is a mix of finely ground almonds
with sugar or honey.
This form lends itself well for being formed into many shapes
to closely resemble anything that it is supposed to represent.

Marzipan shaped as pigs is a very popular treat
in December or Easter celebrations.

Marzipan in the end of December is often given as “lucky pigs”.
Another December tradition is a huge marzipan sold in pieces,
to substitute the “festive” slaughter of a real pig.

Or also because pigs just look cute and pink is a very sweet color.
Other popular shapes are fruit, eggs, potatoes, etc.
Lately marzipan has been made to resemble many types
of food to give as joke-candy.
