Mincemeat is a traditional method of preserving food.
A typical mincemeat meat was made with:
meat
fat (butter or suet)
fruit
spices
These ingredients were chopped and mashed together.
This method goes back at least as far as the 15th century
in England.

Due to severe shortages resulting from World War II meat
was often omitted
and only animal fat was used.

Nowadays, it’s common to find mincemeat without any
meat products
at all.

SSome people don’t even remember why the word
“mincemeat” has “meat” in it at all
finding the idea to
have meat in such a sweet dish not even appetizing
.

Modern mincemeat is usually:
fruit
fat (butter or vegetable fats)
spices
Since mincemeat has become a luxury food, ingredients
like spirits, nuts and sweeteners may also be added.

Mincemeat in it’s original form is quite similar to
North American pemmican and the Russian tolkusha
which were made in similar ways and for the same
purpose of preserving.
