Odometer Day celebrates the day in 1847 when William Clayton developed the “roadometer” to count the miles on a wagon.

The roadometer counted the revolutions of the wagon wheel and multiplying it by the circumference of the wheels, which resulted in a reasonable accurate count of distance measured. This idea was not new, though. The first documented maybe-odometer, documented by Plini and Strabo, was used by the troops of Alexander the Great in circa 336-323 BC. The first documented use of an actual odometer was described by Vitruvius around 27 -23 BC probably invented by Archimedes of Syracuse.
