Square dancing is easy to confuse with line dancing. The difference is that square dancing happens in a square! The way that works is that 8 dancers form 4 couples and each couple is positioned on the corner of a visual
or imaginary square. Square dances have existed at least since the 16th century
in England. But are also known for a long time in many parts of Europe. Square dancing also became a popular among people who colonized North America as European immigrants brought
along many parts of their culture.
“There is a bit of insanity in dancing
that does everybody a great deal of good.” — Edwin Denby
