World Poetry Day adapted from Poetry Day which was created by by Anson Gonzalez and The New Voices on October 15, 1979. This date was chosen as it is the birthday of Publius Vergilius Maro, a Roman poet who lived from 70 BC until 19 BC.
Over the years following 1979, Poetry Day evolved into various different national poetry days. Which is why most of these national poetry days have a date in or around October.
Eventually a more encompassing World Poetry Day organized by The Writers’ Union of Trinidad and Tobago developed
In 1999 World Poetry Day was adopted by UNESCO.
