|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 00:00 on day 16 of August, repeating indefinitely

August 16

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

First occurrence:
Centuries ago

An old tradition in Languedoc-Roussillon where on August 16, starting at exactly 11 o’clock in the morning, hot chocolate is distributed from large cauldrons on open fires.
A sweet and warm way to start the day on this remarkable annual event.
The local chocolatiers are especially involved to proudly show off their blends of chocolaty tastes.

According to local lore, the Xicolatade tradition started
as a follow up for an annual traditional feast
that happened on August 15.
As alcoholic drinks flowed freely,
many people had hangovers the next day.
Hot chocolate was a popular cure for hangover.

Hot chocolate as a cure for hangover makes some sense,
because drinking any fluid at all helps with hydration.
Chocolate contains several forms of minerals which replenish
nutritional needs of the body and also helps with rehydration.
The sugar, caffeine and theobromines help regaining energy
and lift the mood.

The feast may be largely forgotten,
but the big cauldrons of chocolates
stayed as a yearly tradition.
