Many sites claim the date April 29 as the day any of the patent holders for zipper like fasteners requested or received their patent.
We couldn’t find any reliable data on this.
🤐
Zipper is a cool name for what Elias developed in 1851 as an “automatic continuous clothing closure”. This “zipper” didn’t work quite well and the name was hard to remember.
Then in 1893, Whitcomb L. Judson from Chicago, received a patent for his “clasp locker and unlocker of shoes”. This device was sturdier, easier, but still not a name that people remembered.
Swedish engineer Gideon Sundback redesigned it in 1913, receiving the patent in 1917 for the “Separable Fastener”. This fastener looked more like the zippers we know as the teeth were closer together. Still not a very snappy name.
Finally in 1923 B.F. Goodrich coined the term “zipper” which made this “sliding fastener” finally marketable.
