Mincemeat Day

Mincemeat Day is celebrated every year on October 26.

Mincemeat is traditionally a method of preserving meat and fruit together by chopping and mincing it up together with added spices and spirits.
This method goes back at least as far as the 15th century in England.

Due to severe shortages resulting from World War II the meat was often left out and only animal fat was used.
Nowadays it’s not uncommon to find mincemeat without any meat products at all and some people don’t even remember why the word “mincemeat” has “meat” in it at all, finding the idea to have meat in such a sweet dish actually not even appetizing.

Mincemeat in it’s original form is quite similar to the North American pemmican and the Russian tolkusha which were made in similar ways and for the same purpose of preserving.
